What’s going on

On 2024-September-20 during the WordCamp US keynote, Matt Mullenweg, the CEO of Automattic, went nuclear on WP Engine, an Automattic competitor. He did this because WP Engine declined to pay him 8% of their gross (not net) revenue (~$32 million per year). To learn about this crazy🤯 story – including cease and desists, lawsuits, and injunctions – see the Links section below.

My history with and thoughts about Wordpress

In the early 2000s, I was thinking about what blog1 software to use and was paying a lot of attention to the many options (Blogger,2 Movable Type, Wordpress, etc). I eliminated Wordpress as one of my options because of Matt’s spamgate scandal (links below) and some other sleazy things I read about him. This reminds me of this Maya Angelou quote:

“When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”

Fortunately, I believed what Matt showed me in the early 2000s and have never used Wordpress and have discouraged others from using it.
