Why

While trying various incarnations of the KDE Plasma desktop environment on my Linux laptop, I decided I’d like to try some default KDE apps on my Windows devices.

What

Two default KDE Plasma apps that I particularly like are the Dolphin file manager and the Kate editor. To learn about these, see the following links.

Install on Windows

Based on information on the above websites, it was not obvious to me how to install the latest version of each of these on Windows. This unobviousness is what inspired me to write this article.

Via the KDE Binary Factory

How I installed Dolphin on Windows

On binary-factory.kde.org/job/Dolphin_Release_win64/, I downloaded the latest .exe file, for example dolphin-23.04.1-1904-windows-cl-msvc2019-x86_64.exe, and then ran this installer on my Windows device.

How I installed Kate on Windows

On binary-factory.kde.org/job/Kate_Release_win64/, I downloaded the latest .exe file, for example kate-23.04.1-2032-windows-cl-msvc2019-x86_64.exe, and then ran this installer on my Windows device.

Via a package manager

Since I wanted a recent version of each of these, I got them from the KDE Binary Factory. If you do not need or want to be on the cutting edge, you can install these with a Windows package manager such as Chocolatey, Scoop, or winget.
