New year, new strategies

I spend a lot of time researching1 ways I can improve my computing world (and my world in general). The new year🐉2 has inspired me to stop researching and start making changes. Below I discuss some of my browsing and bookmarking strategies.

Overwhelmed by browser tabs

I use a lot of browsers on a lot of devices and platforms,3 and almost always have literally hundreds of tabs open. When I close a browser, I usually do it in a way that all its tabs reopen when I relaunch the browser.4 I do this because, for each tab, I want to either…

All these tabs are overwhelming to me (and to my computers).😵‍💫

My bookmarking systems

Old bookmarking system

For a few years, I’ve been publicly bookmarking web pages on Infinite Ink’s portals. This system works for pages that might be interesting to Infinite Ink’s audience, but does not work for pages…

What I want

I want an easy way to save pages so that they are…

  1. viewable from anywhere,
  2. available offline,
  3. searchable,
  4. annotatable, and
  5. backed up somewhere remote.

New bookmarking system: Zotero 7

I recently started using the following Zotero tools.

These tools satisfy my five “wants” and have inspired me to start working through my browser tabs and for each tab, either close it or save a snapshot of it and then close it.

Conclusion

So far, I ♡ my new bookmarking system and I’m optimistic 2024 will be the year I quit being a hoarder of tabs.

Happy bookmarking!🔖
Happy Year of the Dragon!🐉2

  5. Zotero’s web app is called “Zotero web library” and it has less functionality than Zotero’s desktop app. To learn about it, see zotero.org/support/kb/web_vs_desktop↩︎

  6. I’m thinking about purchasing unlimited (♾️) storage for $120/year. For details about purchasing various levels of storage, see zotero.org/storage↩︎
